i am myself alone
This is an experiment of language, poetry, and culture.
Farsi is the language of poetry and Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers of all time, so I wondered what would happen if I intersected them. I set to translating monologues and moments in Richard III that spoke to me. I knew I didn’t want the piece to just be a showcase of my translation work, so I began to form a character. Not solely Richard, but instead, an Iranian woman taking on his role. I’d like to think that I blurred the lines between the two.
Muslim and Middle-Eastern women are often told they are oppressed and part of a religion that hates them and I wanted to explore the self-hatred that comes with being told you are a villain.
